In recent weeks, I have been talking with nonprofit leaders across the country to learn how they are dealing with the challenges we all face: managing finances in this turbulent economic time, attracting and keeping great talent, managing multigenerational staff, and more. We’re sharing these conversations with you in a new podcast series,

In recent weeks, I have been talking with nonprofit leaders across the country to learn how they are dealing with the challenges we all face: managing finances in this turbulent economic time, attracting and keeping great talent, managing multigenerational staff, and more. We’re sharing these conversations with you in a new podcast series, Nonprofits Now: Leading Today.

To figure out what topics were most important for us to cover, my colleagues and I pored over our exclusive survey of leaders. Among the concerns that ranked high: A stunning two-thirds of leaders said society’s fissures are making it hard to get things done.

In episode one, I asked Tim Dixon for advice on how to overcome hurdles. Tim, co-founder of More in Common, explained the value of forging alliances with unlikely partners. He also offered strategies you can use to help your staff members if they’re divided by political and social differences.

I hope you’ll listen to Tim and tune in tomorrow when we share episode two, which tackles how to get your boards involved in fiscal planning and fundraising. I’m joined by two experienced CEOs — Nick Grono and Kathleen St. Louis Caliento — who have ideas you can put to use right away. Visit the podcast page tomorrow and each Tuesday through the end of June to catch all nine conversations.

Meanwhile, you’ll want to read more from the Chronicle on these topics, including:

  • Opinion: A 3-Part Playbook to Build Connection and Community
  • How to Retain Skittish Donors Amid the Economic Turbulence
  • Funders Should Support Nonprofit Leadership Transitions — Now

I hope you have a productive and fulfilling week.

Tip of the Week

To shore up your donor base during uncertain economic times, it’s important to stay engaged with supporters — whether they are giving or not. Organizations should talk to donors to find out what they’re thinking. Listen carefully and respond accordingly, says Laura Fredricks, a fundraising consultant and author of Hard Asks Made Easy. If donors are unnerved and pull back, be supportive. “Say, ‘We totally understand. If there’s anything we can help you with, let us know,’” Fredricks says. "... When all this is done, they’re going to remember you.” For more sound advice, read How to Retain Skittish Donors Amid the Economic Turbulence.

New Grant Opportunities

Your Chronicle subscription includes free access to GrantStation’s database of grant opportunities.

Performing Arts: Venturous Theater Fund’s Venturous Capital Grants support productions of new plays perceived as especially challenging at nonprofit theaters across the U.S. Support is provided for productions of text-based, author-driven new plays that are ambitious in scale, epic in scope, challenging in form, controversial in subject matter, experimental in concept, or unabashed in their theatricality. Grants primarily range from $5,000 to $30,000; letters of inquiry accepted May 1 to June 2.

Civics: The Herb Block Foundation’s Encouraging Citizen Involvement grant program seeks to help ensure a responsible, responsive democratic government through citizen involvement. Support is provided nationally. Proposals may focus on citizen education and greater voter participation in the electoral process. (All projects must be nonpartisan and may not involve lobbying for specific legislation or candidates.) Grants range from $5,000 to $25,000; letters of inquiry due June 4.
