Site visits from grant makers can feel like a weird cross between kindergarten show-and-tell and staging a home to sell it, says former nonprofit leader Joan Garry in her latest column. These visits take a lot of time and energy, and too often the opportunity to build authentic relationships is lost, and grant makers learn little that enriches their philanthropic work.

“One of the things that’s really exciting when we think about A.I. and the nonprofit sector is that it’s not just about increasing efficiencies,” says Sarah Di Troia, senior strategic advisor of product innovation at Project Evident, which helps organizations use data to measure and improve their impact. “You can really begin thinking about different types of machine-learning applications or generative A.I. as a way to move towards mission attainment.”

Di Troia joined a panel of experts for an online forum that explained A.I.'s fundamentals and highlighted its potential through real-world examples. Afua Bruce, principal at ANB Advisory Group LLC, which helps organizations use data and technology, and Carrie Fassett, director of partnerships and impact at the Greater DC Diaper Bank joined Di Troia.

My colleague Lisa Schohl wrote in a summaryof the forum:

A “critical step to take when developing an A.I. tool is to define clear guiding principles for how you’ll use it, says Fassett of the DC Diaper Bank, which created an A.I. model to help guide its strategy for diaper distribution.” The diaper bank’s principles include “not letting A.I. stop a family from receiving services, not collecting data the group doesn’t need, and ensuring equitable practices for gathering and sharing data,” says Fasset, who also cautions A.I. users to revisit these principles often. “You don’t build your model and then stop,” she says.

When developing principles, Afua Bruce advises nonprofits to include guidelines for collecting and sharing data, compensating people for their time and data, and involving your community in decisions about your A.I. systems. “We have to recognize that, in 2023, caring for our communities, caring for our clients is caring for their digital health and their digital data,” Bruce says.

Tip of the Week

To boost fundraising and get supporters more involved in your work, survey them to get more information and analyze the data. Pride, passion, identity, and awareness all determine a donor’s level of engagement with an organization — and surveys can quantify those intangibles. Ask donors about their hobbies and interests as well as why they are drawn to your work; this will deepen your understanding of what makes them tick. To learn more, read Not Sure What Donor Data to Collect? Think About Why People Care About Your Nonprofit.

Lead-based paint. The Department of Housing and Urban Development supports research to gain knowledge on improving the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of methods for evaluation and control of residential lead-based paint hazards and housing-related health and safety hazards. The program is particularly focused on children’s health. The application deadline is October 30.

Energy. The Department of Agriculture seeks to lower energy costs for families and individuals in areas with extremely high per-household energy costs. The program supports the implementation of efforts such as energy-efficiency improvements and conservation measures (i.e. weatherization of residences and community facilities), programs encouraging the use of energy-saving appliances and devices, and programs aimed at improving the quality and cost of energy service. The application deadline is October 31.
