Frugal Social Worker Gives $11 Million, Maltz Jupiter Theatre Gets $5 Million: Gifts Roundup

A roundup of notable gifts compiled by the Chronicle:

Milton and Tamar Maltz pledged $5 millionthrough their Milton and Tamar Maltz Family Foundation for renovations and an expansion project.

The Maltzes, longtime supporters of the theater, will match any new donation made to the organization’s capital campaign dollar-for-dollar up to $5 million.

Milton Maltz founded Malrite Communications Group in 1956 to operate television and radio stations across the county, and he led it until he sold the company in 1998. He began his career in broadcasting as a child actor in radio dramas and also appeared in a number of TV broadcasts during its early years.

The late Alan Naiman, a social worker in the Seattle area, left nearly $2.3 million to pay off the charity’s mortgage. The nonprofit helps infants who have been exposed to opiates and other narcotics.

Naiman died last year after a battle with cancer and reportedly left a total of about $11 million to a number of charities that help needy and sick children including Treehouse, a foster-care organization; Childhaven; Little Bit Therapeutic Riding Center; Make-a-Wish Alaska and Washington; Odessa Brown Children’s Clinic; and others.

He worked for 20 years for Washington State Department of Children, Youth, and Families and was previously a banker. His wealth came from years of savvy investing and an inheritance of several million dollars from his parents.

George and Beverly Rawlings gave $2 million through their Rawlings Foundation to renovate and expand the medical center’s emergency department.

George Rawlings founded the Rawlings Group, a health-care claims recovery company, in La Grange, Ky.

Jeffrey Seller and his partner, Josh Lehrer, pledged $1 million through their Seller-Lehrer Family Foundation to back two of the nonprofit’s key programs, a summer camp and the Mosaic Experience Empowerment Program.

Seller is a Broadway producer best known for his work on such musicals as Hamilton, Rent, and In the Heights. Lehrer is a photographer.
