Citi Foundation Taps a Familiar Face (Transitions)

Brandee McHale, who left last summer to lead the Wells Fargo Foundation and oversee its $1 billion pledge for affordable housing, is returning to Citi as managing director and head of community investing and development.

She will also resume her position as president of the Citi Foundation.

McHale succeeds Bob Annibale, who is retiring.

Doris Duke Charitable Foundation

Ed Henry will step down as CEO of the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation in December after 12 years at the helm and 15 years at the $1.9 billion foundation.

He also serves as president of the Duke Farms Foundation and the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art.

A successor has not yet been named.

LBJ School of Public Affairs, UT Austin

Randall Kempner, executive director of the Aspen Institute’s Aspen Network of Development Entrepreneurs, has been named CEO of the Cynthia and George Mitchell Foundation, in Austin, Tex.

He succeeds Katherine Lorenz and will be the first chief executive of the $253 million fund who isn’t a member of the Mitchell family.

Marilu Hastings has also been promoted from vice president for sustainability programs to chief innovation and strategy officer.

Communities In Schools

Rey Saldaña will become CEO of Communities in Schools this month.

The son of two immigrants, he is a former San Antonio city councilman and an alumnus of this program, which keeps students on track to graduate from high school. Most recently, he was the regional advocacy director at the Raise Your Hand Texas Foundation.

Debbie Chang, senior vice president and chief policy and prevention officer at Nemours Children’s Health System in Jacksonville, Fla., has been named CEO of the Blue Shield of California Foundation, a $90 million grant maker that works to reduce poor health and violence.

Larry Lieberman will be the new CEO of Mouse, a digital-education charity. Most recently he worked as a producer of podcasts, television, and online media in New York. He was also chief operating officer at Charity Navigator until 2018.

Paige Alexander, executive director of the European Cooperative for Rural Development, has been appointed CEO of the Carter Center, effective June 16. She will succeed Mary Ann Peters, who is retiring after almost six years at this nonprofit group founded by former U.S. President Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, in 1982.

Amy Braun, head of U.S. marketing and communications at Pai Technology, has been named president and CEO of HealthCorps, a wellness charity founded by the television personality and doctor Mehmet Oz and his wife, Lisa.

A.E. Hotchner, a biographer and playwright who created the Newman’s Own Foundation with his friend, the late actor Paul Newman, died on February 15 at the age of 102. He and Newman also co-founded the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, a nonprofit that operates a summer camp for seriously ill children.

John Haydon, a digital-marketing consultant for nonprofits, died of cancer on February 8. He was 53.
