Nonprofit News From Elsewhere Online

Amid Gov. Gavin Newsom’s push for a mid-decade gerrymander, two good-government groups in California are finding that sticking by their principles is neither easy nor clear-cut in an era of deep partisanship. The League of Women Voters and Common Cause have gone neutral on Newsom’s plan after initially opposing it. The switch came after internal debates and partly in response to attempts by the “no” campaign to co-opt an early League statement against the gerrymander. The turnabout led half of Common Cause’s 10-person state board to quit. (New York Times)
