With federal research funding thrown into upheaval, one of the world’s foremost mathematicians says he is focusing on fundraising rather than high-level equations. Terence Tao, a renowned researcher at the University of California at Los Angeles, has been meeting with donors to try to restore stability to the Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics, where he leads special projects. The institute’s current federal funding was frozen until a court order restored it, but the outlook for future grants is bleak. (Washington Post)
