Disaster-aid groups that receive federal funds are now barred from helping undocumented people, under new contracts drawn up by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The contracts also apply to states’ disaster-relief efforts, and they require states and nonprofits to cooperate with immigration-enforcement operations. One expert said “there is no historical context” for these new conditions, which the leader of an association of faith-based disaster-relief groups called a First Amendment infringement. Diverse Communities: The GEICO Philanthropic Foundation provides grants to nonprofit organizations nationwide that deliver programs to support and uplift diverse communities. Its funding priorities include expanding access to education, particularly in STEM, early childhood learning, and safety. The Foundation also invests in community engagement efforts that address issues such as financial literacy, food insecurity, environmental conservation, animal welfare, and health and wellness. Annual giving $6 to $8 million; application deadline December 31.
Justice: The Impact Fund provides recoverable grants to nonprofit legal services, private attorneys, and small law firms working on cases that advance civil rights, environmental justice, and economic fairness. Grants primarily support class actions or multi-plaintiff litigation designed to create systemic change, with funding directed toward case-related costs such as expert fees and discovery. Grants range from $10,000 to $50,000; letters of interest due October 7.
