A group of large foundations has pooled nearly $27 million to help local public media survive the end of federal funding. The Public Media Bridge Fund will support radio and television stations that are among the only sources of news and information in their communities and that received a large chunk of their budgets from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which is shutting down after federal funding cuts. The effort’s backers hope to raise $50 million this year. They include the Knight, MacArthur, Ford, Schmidt Family, and Robert Wood Johnson foundations and Melinda French Gates’s Pivotal Ventures philanthropy. (New York Times)
