Planned Parenthood clinics in Democratic-led states are hoping state officials come to the rescue with millions of dollars if a Republican effort to cut off their Medicaid funds succeeds. The cut-off is embedded in the tax-and-spending package making its way through Congress. The organization has said about one-third of its 600 clinics nationwide would be at risk if they lost Medicaid reimbursements. (Politico)
A breakthrough drug that offers “total protection” from HIV is among the casualties of the Trump administration’s slashing of foreign aid. Lenacapavir was to be rolled out this year in southern and eastern Africa, along with other promising treatments, until the administration gutted a U.S.-funded effort to end the AIDS pandemic. Health workers say there is evidence that infection rates have climbed since treatment programs have shuttered, but they no longer have the resources to track them. Advocates are trying to patch together more funding from other countries and philanthropies, including the Gates Foundation. (New York Times)
