Nonprofit News From Elsewhere Online

Aid groups that are already stretched thin are bracing for the hurricane season without knowing how much assistance the Federal Emergency Management Agency will provide this year. FEMA has lost 2,000 employees since January, and President Trump has said he wants to shift more disaster recovery work to the states. Aid groups and private donors say a federal presence is irreplaceable, citing FEMA’s role in coordinating resources and communication, along with the essential aid it provides to people facing major losses. “If the funding to the people gets eliminated, that’s all they have,” the president of one aid group said. (Associated Press)

Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley is threatening an immigrants-rights coalition in Los Angeles with a federal probe, accusing it of “bankrolling” the civil unrest there. In a letter to Angelica Salas, leader of the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights, Hawley, who chairs a subcommittee on crime and counterterrorism, wrote, “Let me be clear: bankrolling civil unrest is not protected speech. It is aiding and abetting criminal conduct.” Salas denied the accusations and said they are an attempt “to take away the spotlight from the pain and suffering that this administration is causing. I refuse to make it about anybody else but them.” (Los Angeles Times)
