Public broadcasting has long been a target of the GOP, for fiscal or ideological reasons, but until recently, it enjoyed support from some Republican members of Congress from rural districts. With President Trump urging lawmakers to strip NPR and PBS of $1.1 billion in funding, that support appears to have dried up, and public opinion is now split largely along partisan lines.
