After a year of retrenchment for Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan’s philanthropy, current and former employees say the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative is following the shifting political winds and is fundamentally hamstrung by its association with Meta, Facebook, and its famous founders. CZI ended its social advocacy work this year, capping off a yearslong abandonment of efforts in diversity, equity, and inclusion, along with education and criminal justice reform. While one former employee said the shift was essentially to avoid being sued by the Trump administration, another suggested “Chan and Zuckerberg steered clear of controversy not because they feared how negative headlines would affect them, but how it would affect their work.” (San Francisco Standard)

A federal judge has ruled that the administration cannot block federal grants to groups that embrace diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts or acknowledge the existence of transgender people. In a lawsuit brought by LGBTQ organizations and health centers, the judge said such grant cutoffs “reflect an effort to censor constitutionally protected speech and services.” The plaintiffs had argued that the administration does not have the authority to block congressionally appropriated funds and that executive orders banning federal funds for DEI work or work with transgender people made it impossible for them to carry out their missions. The government will likely appeal. (Associated Press)
