President Trump has asked Congress to rescind $9 billion in foreign aid and funding for public broadcasting that was approved in the budget bill recently passed. The request, which House Speaker Mike Johson said Congress would act on “as quickly as possible,” seeks to codify cuts previously demanded by executive order and Elon Musk’s DOGE team. Public broadcasting executives, whose services stand to lose $1.1 billion, said the cuts would gut local programming and emergency services, particularly in rural areas. (New York Times)

The Trump administration has called into question Columbia University’s accreditation, accusing the school of civil rights violations over its handling of what it deems antisemitism on campus. In a letter to the commission that accredits Columbia, Education Secretary Linda McMahon wrote that the school’s leadership “acted with deliberate indifference towards the harassment of Jewish students on its campus,” after the Oct. 7 Hamas attacks on Israel. A Columbia spokesperson said the school “is deeply committed to combatting antisemitism on our campus.” The administration has already revoked $400 million in federal grants for the school and is pushing to put it under federal oversight.
