A pioneer in the development of artificial intelligence has started a nonprofit to create an “honest” version of the technology, to limit the harm from potential rogue AI systems. With about $30 million and more than a dozen researchers, computer scientist Yoshua Bengio’s LawZero nonprofit aims to demonstrate the viability of an AI that would run alongside autonomous AI systems, assessing whether their actions have the potential to harm. The project is backed by former Google CEO Eric Schmidt’s Schmidt Sciences, AI safety body the Future of Life Institute, and Jaan Tallinn, a founding engineer of Skype. (Guardian)

In the wake of President Trump’s takeover of the Kennedy Center, subscription sales for the coming season are down by 36 percent from last year, according to information shared with the Washington Post. A former employee called the new numbers a drastic drop-off after a continuing recovery from pandemic shutdowns, and a current staffer said the audience is voicing its displeasure with “the hostile takeover of their performing arts center.” A Kennedy Center spokesperson said the annual renewal campaign is just getting started and that hard-copy brochures, which also drive sales, “have not yet hit homes.” (Washington Post)
