Data visuals help nonprofits communicate clear, powerful messages of impact to donors and grant makers. But if they’re not done well, they may end up confusing your supporters. Stephanie Evergreen, CEO of Evergreen Data, shared five essential tipson how to make stronger charts without having to learn new tools.

The easiest tip to implement: Always make sure a chart’s title tells viewers what they should take away from the visual. “A descriptive title answers the first questions that will bubble up for your audience and shifts the conversation from confusion to congratulations,” Evergreen writes. In addition, when charting a trend, make sure to annotate key moments in time so the chart tells a story at a glance.

Evergreen also shows how to create visuals that are more dynamic alternatives to simple bar charts. To learn how, read Evergreen’s article, Data Visuals That Wow: 5 Easy Ways to Show Impact.

Have a great week!

Tip of the Week

Treat your everyday donors like they really matter. Major-gift fundraisers specialize in building lasting relationships with major donors. And some of those practices can be applied at scale to donors who give small amounts, says Allison Fine, president of Every.org, an online giving platform. AI can help a lot in this regard by customizing outreach based on donor preference and history; ensuring timely and thoughtful communication; and freeing up fundraisers’ time so that they can engage directly with donors. But always make sure a human is reviewing its work. Read more of Allison’s tips on building strong ties with everyday donors in “How to Treat Every Donor Like They Matter — and Keep Them.”

New Grant Opportunities

Your Chronicle subscription includes free access to GrantStation’s database of grant opportunities.

Helping Pets and People Stay Together: The RedRover Relief program offers multiple grant opportunities to support the care of animals in crisis situations. It provides urgent care grants of around $250 for pet owners facing financial hardship, Safe Escape grants for domestic violence survivors needing pet boarding, and Safe Housing grants of up to $60,000 to organizations creating pet-friendly spaces for survivors of abuse or homelessness. No application deadline for Urgent Care and Domestic Violence Safe Escape Grants. Applications for Domestic Violence Safe Housing Grants are due September 1.

Advancing Justice and Sustainability: The Park Foundation funds initiatives that foster a more just, equitable, and sustainable society, both nationally and in Ithaca, NY. Its grantmaking spans democracy reform, civic participation, public interest media, environmental justice (particularly water and energy), animal welfare, and community-focused programs in Tompkins County. Priorities include systemic change through advocacy, education, and organizing, with a strong emphasis on equity, informed engagement, and long-term impact. No deadline for letters of inquiry.
