Election season may finally be over, but for nonprofit leaders preparing for the next administration, there’s still a long road of uncertainty ahead.
For those unsure of how to get started, this week we shared three crucial steps for navigating post-election uncertainty from Tom Bartlett and Sara Gibson, co-founders of 20 Degrees.
First up? If you haven’t started scenario planning, now’s the time to begin considering how the incoming administration’s priorities might impact your organization. Thinking through your response now to a loss of federal funding — or possibilities for new partnerships — can help you more deftly navigate different situations as they arise — within reason, of course.
“It’s easy to spiral, so set a time limit” of no more than a few hours at a time for scenario planning, Tom and Sara wrote. “We also recommend revisiting these scenarios in February and June, when more information is known and it becomes clearer which changes are unfolding.”
At times like these, it’s also incumbent on leaders to overcommunicate all of the “what-ifs” with key staff and board members. It’s better to have a team at your side ready to respond and ensure your mission continues forward, no matter what, Tom and Sara write.
