Here are notable new grant awards compiled by the Chronicle:
Rockefeller Foundation and Mastercard Center for Inclusive Growth
$50 million over five years to Data Science for Social Impact to help charitable organizations better collaborate and share ideas. One of the effort’s first grantees, DataKind, has received $20 million.
$20 million to the University of Central Arkansas to complete construction on the Windgate Center for Fine and Performing Arts and augment a scholarship fund for art majors at the university.
$5 million to the St. Charles Parish school system, in New Orleans, for the Dr. Rodney R. Lafon Performing Arts Center Endowment Fund.
$3 million to Seattle University’s capital campaign for the new Center for Science and Innovation and related academic programs that explore the ethical implications of artificial intelligence.
John Templeton Foundation
$2.6 million to Baylor University for research on the psychological impact on teenagers of “virtue interventions,” like participation in team sports, religious organizations, online groups, and youth community centers.
John S. and James L. Knight Foundation
$2.5 million to the Barnes Foundation for the art museum’s digital audience-engagement programs.
$2 million to the University of California at Los Angeles to support three programs that bring together young and old people: Generation Xchange, TimeOut@UCLA, and the UCLA Alzheimer’s and Dementia Care program.
Andrew W. Mellon Foundation
$2.2 million to the Academy of American Poets to establish a fellowship program for poets laureate throughout the country and support the work of the Poetry Coalition, a collaboration of more than 20 poetry organizations in 11 cities.
Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation
$1 million to Providence Saint John’s Health Center to establish the Center for Robotic Joint Replacement.
CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield
$1 million to the Federal Employee Education and Assistance Fund to provide emergency financial assistance to civilian federal and postal workers affected in the recent federal shutdown. The Blue Cross Blue Shield Association also gave $1 million to the program.
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has issued a request for proposals for grants through its Professional Learning Partnerships program for schools and education nonprofit groups, particularly those located in California, Florida, Georgia, New York, and North Carolina. The purpose of the program is to increase the number of black, Latino, English-learning, and low-income students who graduate with a high-school diploma. Each grant will be worth up to $1 million over about 2.5 years. Proposals are due March 8.
