Growth of Nonprofit Groups by Metropolitan Area

January 6, 2005

The Chronicle of Philanthropy

The number of nonprofit organizations registered with the Internal Revenue Service has grown rapidly over the past five years. The number of nonprofit organizations registered with the Internal Revenue Service has grown rapidly over the past five years. This table shows the growth in charities within each of the 276 metropolitan areas (as defined by the U.S. government). It can be sorted in a range of ways, such as by percentage change in number of new charities or population, by clicking on the labels at the top of each column.

Note: Metropolitan areas that cover more than one state are listed by their primary state only. For example, the Philadelphia/Wilmington/Atlantic City metropolitan area is listed under Pennsylvania, not Delaware or New Jersey.

Jump to the areas with a total number of nonprofit groups of:
3,000 or more | 1,000-2,999 | 500-999 | 375-499 | Fewer than 375
