Grants Roundup: Mastercard Commits $100 Million to Jobs Program in Africa

The Mastercard Foundation is giving Young Africa Works $100 million to help young Africans, particularly women, learn skills and secure high-quality jobs by 2030.

The Mastercard Foundation is giving Young Africa Works $100 million to help young Africans, particularly women, learn skills and secure high-quality jobs by 2030.

Here are notable new grant awards compiled by the Chronicle:

Mastercard Foundation

$100 million to Young Africa Works, its new strategy to help 30 million young Africans, particularly women, learn skills and secure high-quality jobs by 2030.

Harry T. Mangurian Jr. Foundation

$10 million to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society for a clinical trial on treating acute myeloid leukemia with precision medicine, which tailors cancer treatment based on the individual patient’s needs. Mangurian died of the disease in 2008.

$2 million to Northwestern University to study how cellular damage during the aging process contributes to neurodegeneration.

Microsoft Philanthropies

$1.8 million to Team Rubicon for technology, services, and training for its corps of volunteers — 70 percent of whom are military veterans — who provide direct relief in disaster zones.

Cleveland Foundation

$1.1 million to the Neighborhood Leadership Institute for employment, after-school activities, community service, and engagement and leadership programs for youths in Cleveland.

New Grant Opportunities

The Keeling Curve Prize is accepting nominations from individuals and organizations working in the mission areas of the Global Warming Mitigation Project: sustainable agriculture, energy storage, distributed or decentralized energy generation, and accelerating current climate-change projects and technology. Up to 10 prizes of $25,000 will be awarded to support projects in the beginning stages of development. Applications are due April 1.

The South Asian Bar Association Foundation is offering grants to nonprofit organizations that serve South Asian communities in the United States. Four grants of $5,000 each will be awarded to charities working in the following areas: domestic violence, immigration rights, hate crimes, discrimination and racial profiling, or community access to justice. Applications are due April 9.
