Shawna Walraven has been tapped as president and CEO of the Bay Area Community Foundation. She was most recently finance director, treasurer, and assistant corporate counsel for Michigan’s County of Bay. Walraven succeeds Diane Mahoney, who led the $60 million community fund in Michigan for seven years.

Joel Fleishman, a scholar of philanthropy and former president of the U.S. arm of the Atlantic Philanthropies, died on September 30 at age 90. He taught philanthropy, voluntarism, and nonprofit law management at Duke University for 53 years and was the founding director of its Sanford School of Public Policy. He concurrently served as president of the Atlantic Philanthropic Service Company from 1993 to 2001, helping the businessman Charles Feeney give away billions of dollars anonymously. Martin Paley died on September 12 at age 94. A veteran nonprofit leader and consultant in California, he was the former CEO of the San Francisco Foundation, the San Francisco Library Foundation, and the Koret Foundation.
